DIY Faux Mistletoe Swags

DIY Mistletoe Swag

I love getting greenery as a gift during the holidays--and faux greenery is a gift that can be used year after year. To commemorate getting engaged this year, I decided to make a faux mistletoe swag for both Andrew and me to jump-start our own Christmas decorations collection. It will make for a nice piece to have hanging up year to year--and I personalized it slightly as well! Here are the steps to make one for your own home or to gift as well:

The supplies needed...

  • Faux mistletoe floral picks (I used two felt ones from Magnolia, but you can find these in other styles at your local craft and hobby shops)
  • Chalk finish paint
  • Velvet Ribbon (or any kind of ribbon you like)
  • Mini Embroidery hoops (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)

To begin, start by taking your mini hoop and pop the center wood disc piece out. Paint one side with the chalkboard paint and let it dry. Then you can either use acrylics to paint an image or scene or with a white paint pen you can do some basic initials for a "monogram" (which I did here with my fiancĂ©'s initials and mine). When the disc is done the drying, pop it back into the hoop frame and fasten it tightly inside with the screw. Cut about a three-inch piece of wire and thread this through the top in order to fasten the hoop onto the swags later. Set that aside for a minute.

Intertwine and fluff your picks until they are in the desired "droplet" shape you like when held upside down.

Make sure you give them a bit of a twist together at the top of the branchs (4) to help keep them in place. Then using hot glue intermittently wrap your ribbon around the branches to hide the wires.

With a separate piece of ribbon tie a single bow to your liking, then hot glue it to the swag where the leaves begin leaving some of the ribbon wrapped wires showing at the top as seen below...

Now attach the embroidery hoop using the wire tie you created--give a few good twists to ensure that it won't move from its place. With the wire tails, fold up and hot glue down in place so that they are not poking outward.

Taking another small piece of wire, create a loop or hook that will be used to hand the swag. Hot glue to the top of the branches on the backside. Then using small pieces of ribbon cut into squares glue on the back on the wires to cover them up--this is to give it a clean look on the back.

Then it is done and ready to either gift or hang on your own wall and enjoy through the season!
